October traditionally has two birthstones: opal and pink tourmaline. Opal stands for hope, creativity and change; tourmaline for love and a sense of security. In our collection, rose quartz represents the month. Its soft rosé belongs to the same colour family as tourmaline, and it is considerably more robust in everyday wear than a real opal.
These three pieces are the ones most often chosen with the October stone:
An overview of the October stones

| Month | October |
|---|---|
| Traditional stones | Opal and pink tourmaline |
| In our collection | Rose quartz, in a soft rosé shade |
| Meaning | Opal: hope, creativity, change. Tourmaline and rose quartz: love, affection, a sense of security |
| Birth flower | Marigold |
| Star signs | Libra and Scorpio |
For contextThe meanings mentioned are traditional symbolism from various cultures. They describe what a stone stands for and do not promise any effect.
Opal: a stone that changes colour
No other stone looks different from every angle. This shifting colour effect, which experts call play of colour, occurs because light is refracted inside the stone. If you move it, the shimmer moves with it. Even the name hints at this: the Greek opallios means roughly 'to see a change of colour'.
Symbolically, opal stands for hope and creativity, and for the ability to change without losing yourself. That is exactly why it makes a lovely gift in times of transition: a new job, moving house, a fresh start after a difficult time.
Practical noteWith a Mohs hardness of around 5.5 to 6.5, real opals are relatively soft and sensitive to heat and chemicals. So they are not ideal for everyday jewellery, which is one of the reasons why birthstone jewellery usually uses more robust alternatives in the same colour family.
Pink tourmaline: the warmer alternative
If you prefer something clearer and less iridescent, pink tourmaline is the one to choose. Its colour ranges from soft dusky pink to intense pink. Love, compassion and an open heart are attributed to it, qualities that make it a popular gift between mother and daughter or among female friends. With a hardness of 7 to 7.5, it is considerably more resilient than opal.
Why rose quartz represents October in our collection
So you know what you're getting: we create the colours of the twelve months using sparkling cubic zirconia and not natural stones. For October, you choose the rose quartz in a soft rosé shade.
There's a practical reason for this: cubic zirconia is considerably harder and more light-stable than a real opal, the colours stay vivid over the years, and the jewellery remains suitable for everyday wear. In terms of colour, the rose quartz shade ties in with pink tourmaline and stands for the same things: love, affection and a sense of security. If you're looking for real natural stones, you'll find them in our gemstone bracelets.
October's birth flower
Besides its birthstone, every month also has a birth flower. For October, it's the marigold with its warm, glowing orange. Traditionally, it stands for warmth, constancy and creativity. If you'd like to combine the two, you'll find jewellery in our shop that brings the birthstone and birth flower together on one disc. All twelve flowers are listed in the birth flower guide.
Which star signs go with the October stone
October is split between two signs: Libra until 23 October and Scorpio from 24 October. The birthstone applies to both signs, because it is based on the month of birth and not on the star sign.
More pieces with the October stone
The birthstone looks its best paired with an engraving: the stone stands for the when, the engraving for the who. With each of these pieces, you choose the month yourself, so for an October birthday, that's rose quartz.

When the birthstone is the wrong choice
- If a real opal is expected. Our birthstones are cubic zirconia. If you want the real stone with its play of colour, we're not the right place for you.
- If you're not sure of the date of birth. The wrong month undermines the idea. If in doubt, it's better to choose an engraving with a name.
- If rosé isn't her colour. The October shade is a soft pink. Anyone who only wears cool tones will be happier with the name than with the stone.
What should you write on the card?
These are the lines our customers most often write themselves:
- Happy birthday, wishing you nothing but the best.
- A symbol of love, affection and a sense of security.
- Stay just the way you are.
- So you always have us close to you.
Plan your spaceYou write your card text in the cart, in three fields: Greeting, Message, Signature. Together, around 150 characters fit on the card. So that leaves about 100 characters for the message itself.
Frequently asked questions about the October birthstone
What is the birthstone for October?
Traditionally, October has two stones assigned to it: opal and pink tourmaline. In our collection, rose quartz represents October: a soft rosé shade from the same colour family.
Which stone do you use for October?
Rose quartz. Our birthstones are cubic zirconia in the colour of the respective stone, harder and more light-stable than a real opal and therefore better suited to everyday wear.
What does opal mean?
Opal stands for hope, creativity and change. Its shifting play of colour is read symbolically as the ability to change without losing who you are at your core.
Why does October have two birthstones?
The assignment of stones to months has developed over the course of history and has been revised several times. For some months, two stones have held their place in the process, often a traditional one and one that is more readily available or more durable.
What is the birth flower for October?
The marigold. On some pieces, the birthstone and birth flower can be combined on one disc.
Is an opal suitable for everyday jewellery?
Only to a limited extent. With a hardness of 5.5 to 6.5, real opals are relatively soft and sensitive to heat and chemicals. For jewellery that is worn every day, harder stones are the more practical choice.
Which star signs fall in October?
Libra until 23 October and Scorpio from 24 October. The birthstone applies to both, because it is based on the month of birth.
Can I have the October jewellery engraved?
Yes, on almost all pieces. The most common engravings are the name, the date of birth or a small symbol. Allow 3 working days for processing, plus delivery time.
You'll find all the variants in our birthstone collection, and an overview of all twelve months in the birthstone guide. Gifts sorted by recipient are in the gift guide. We make and engrave our pieces here in Hamburg.
