Gemstones and Their Meaning: Genuine Natural Stones

Bernstein-Armband mit graviertem goldenem Herzplättchen und dem Datum 07.12.2025

A birthstone is a colour; a gemstone is a material. The stones for each month in our birthstone range are sparkling cubic zirconia, even in colour and lightfast for years. Our gemstone bracelets, by contrast, feature genuine natural stones: naturally formed, cut, each piece with its own markings. If you want a genuine stone, these are the pieces for you.

The stones we work with

Our natural stones and their traditional symbolism
Moonstone Shimmers bluish white, depending on how the light falls. Traditionally stands for intuition and quiet strength.
Amber Not a mineral but fossilised tree resin, often over 30 million years old. A warm honey-gold. Stands for warmth and protection.
Sunstone Orange to copper-coloured with a fine inner sparkle. Stands for a love of life and optimism.
Malachite Deep green with distinctive banding; no two pieces look the same. Stands for protection and growth.
Obsidian and onyx Deep black, matt or glossy. Obsidian is volcanic glass. Both stand for grounding and setting boundaries.
Tiger's eye Golden brown with a shifting band of light. Stands for courage and a clear perspective.
Lapis lazuli Rich ultramarine blue, often with golden pyrite inclusions. A stone of wisdom since antiquity.
Rainbow tourmaline One stone, many colours in a row. Stands for diversity and balance.
Aquamarine Delicate sea blue. Stands for courage and wide horizons, and is traditionally also the travellers' stone.
Freshwater pearls Grown in mussels, slightly irregular. More on this in our dedicated pearl guide.

For contextThe meanings mentioned here are traditional symbolism from various cultures. They describe what a stone stands for. They are not promises of any effect and do not replace medical treatment.

Genuine stone or cubic zirconia?

Both have their place, and for every piece we tell you what's in it.

Natural stone and cubic zirconia compared
Natural stone Naturally formed. Every piece looks different, and colour and markings vary. Full of character, though some are more delicate. You'll find it in our gemstone bracelets.
Cubic zirconia Man-made. Consistently vivid in colour, very hard and lightfast. That's why the colours of the twelve months in our birthstone range are made with it.

If you want a genuine natural stone, go for the gemstone bracelets. If you're looking for a particular month's colour that stays the same for years, the birthstones are the right choice.

More gemstone bracelets

Every piece can be combined with a disc engraved with a name, a date or a small symbol. That's how a natural stone becomes a piece that belongs to one particular person.

What else our jewellery is made of

Alongside natural stones, we work with three materials, and there's a reason for each:

The metals we work with
Stainless steel Rust-free and skin-friendly; it practically doesn't tarnish and won't discolour your skin. Our everyday material, especially for children's jewellery.
925 sterling silver The finer option for special occasions. It can tarnish over time, but it can be brightened up again with a polishing cloth.
Gold plating 18k gold and rose gold plating on stainless steel, so you get the colour of gold with the robustness of stainless steel.

What goes into a piece is listed on every product page. Everything is made and engraved by us in Hamburg and packed in a jewellery box with a velvet pouch.

How to care for gemstones properly

The most important ruleNatural stone goes on last and comes off first. Perfume, cream and hairspray settle into the surface.

The more delicate stones are mainly amber (soft, reacts to solvents), malachite (do not put it in water) and moonstone. Obsidian, onyx, tiger's eye and haematite are more robust.

A soft, dry cloth is all you need for cleaning. Store your pieces dry and separately; the velvet pouch provided is there for exactly that. Please take them off for showering, swimming and sport.

Why every piece looks different

That isn't a flaw; it's the point. Every piece of malachite has its own banding, every piece of amber its own inclusions, every moonstone its own angle of shimmer. If you lay two pieces side by side, they are never identical, and that's precisely why a natural stone bracelet always belongs to exactly one person.

For the photos, this means they show a real piece, not the exact one you'll receive. Colour and markings may vary slightly.

When a natural stone is the wrong choice

  • For young children. Natural stone is more delicate than stainless steel and doesn't cope well with sandpits and swimming pools. Our sailing rope and satin bracelets are meant for children.
  • When a specific colour is called for. If you're looking for the shade of a particular birth month, you'll get it reliably with cubic zirconia; with natural stone, it varies.
  • When the piece is never meant to come off. Showers, sport and cream take their toll on natural stone. For constant wear, stainless steel is the more suitable material.

What should you write on the card?

These are the lines our customers most often write themselves:

  • Happy birthday, wishing you nothing but the best.
  • So you'll always have us close to you.
  • Stay exactly as you are.
  • We're always here for you.

Plan your spaceYou write it in the cart, in three fields: Greeting, Message, Signature. In total, around 150 characters fit on the card, so that leaves about 100 characters for the message itself.

Frequently asked questions about gemstones

Are your gemstones genuine?

For the gemstone bracelets, yes: they are genuine natural stones such as moonstone, amber, malachite or obsidian. Our birthstone range, on the other hand, uses sparkling cubic zirconia. What's used is stated on every product page.

What do the individual stones mean?

The associations are traditional symbolism from various cultures: moonstone for intuition, amber for warmth and protection, sunstone for a love of life, malachite for protection and growth, tiger's eye for courage, lapis lazuli for wisdom. These are meanings, not promises of any effect.

How do I care for gemstone jewellery?

Put it on last and take it off first, because perfume and cream damage the surface. Clean it with a soft, dry cloth, store it dry and separately, and take it off for showering and sport. In this respect, amber, malachite and moonstone are more delicate than obsidian or tiger's eye.

Why does my stone look different from the photo?

Because it formed naturally and was not man-made. Colour, markings and inclusions differ from stone to stone. The product photo shows a real piece, not the exact one you'll receive.

Can I combine gemstones with an engraving?

Yes, for almost all pieces. The engraving goes on a disc made of stainless steel or 925 sterling silver that sits on the bracelet, not on the stone itself. The usual choices are a name, a date or a small symbol.

Is amber a gemstone?

Strictly speaking, no. Amber is fossilised tree resin, often over 30 million years old, which makes it organic in origin, like pearls. In jewellery, though, it is still counted among the ornamental stones.

How much do your gemstone bracelets cost?

They all fall within the same price bracket of 50 to 80 euros. This includes the natural stone, the metal part and the engraving on the disc.

How long does it take to make?

Allow 3 working days for processing, plus delivery time. Pieces are made and engraved by us in Hamburg.

You'll find all the pieces in the gemstone collection. If you're looking for the colour of a particular month rather than a natural stone, the birthstone guide will help. Gifts sorted by recipient are listed in the gift guide.
